Why Should I Meet with Erdoğan, Bashar al-Assad Asks? Just to Have a Drink?

Bashar al-Assad, whom Erdoğan labeled a ‘killer’, is exploring avenues to rekindle the past!

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who stated he wouldn’t engage under the conditions set by AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, contended that Turkey bears responsibility for the escalation of violence in his war-torn nation. Uttering, “Terrorism in Syria is nurtured in Turkey,” al-Assad mused, “What reason do Bashar al-Assad and Erdoğan have to meet? To share a drink, perhaps?”

The complete remarks of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who spoke to Sky News Arabia the previous day and conveyed his reluctance to meet with Erdoğan, have been published.

Expressing his hesitation to meet with Erdoğan, al-Assad commented, “Our objective is Turkey’s withdrawal from Syrian territories, whereas Erdoğan’s intention is to legitimize Turkey’s presence in Syria. Consequently, a meeting under Erdoğan’s conditions is implausible. Terrorism in Syria is a Turkish enterprise. The Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham – these are different labels for a political faction produced in Turkey and financed by Turkey thus far.”

Al-Assad quipped, “Why should I meet Erdoğan? To share a drink, perhaps?”

Al-Assad highlighted that a “comprehensive dialogue” has been initiated regarding funding return projects with the United Nations humanitarian bodies. He affirmed that the primary challenge in the repatriation of millions of refugees back to the country lies in the “logistical wreckage of infrastructure by terrorists.”

In the interview, al-Assad stated that the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland has become unfeasible due to the state of the infrastructure decimated by the war.

The Syrian President remarked, “How could a refugee return without water, electricity, without schooling for their children, without hospitals? These are the fundamental pillars of life.”
